If the machine came with a Pre-SP version of Windows XP, install the driver that came with the machine on the--driver--disc(s) supplied by the manufacturer.

Try to set a system restore point before installing a device driver. This will help if you installed a wrong driver. Problems can arise when your hardware device is too old or not supported any longer.

If you don't have at least SP1 you are not using USB 2.0 on all those USB devices. USB 2.0 is much much faster than USB 1.1. In that case, it would be worth it to install SP2.

Why do you not want to install SP2? You've obviously encountered at least some problems by NOT having it installed, I would think that would be enough to convince you to do it. I can understand avoiding SP3 for the time being, but SP2 is proven (it's almost 4 yrs old). The only reason I can think of (besides plain ol stubbornness) is that you have a pirated installation of XP.

What is your issue with service packs?

Is it possibly a Windows Genuine Advantage problem?? :)
