Sound device not detected

For a long time, the sound on My PC has been working great. Then it stopped. I know there is nothing wrong with the speakers because they work on other things like CD players and what not, plus it makes a deep pulsing noise seconds before my phone receives a text message. I checked the control panel and it says "No audio device" and all the options for volume and stuff are shaded grey like you can't use them. I'm pretty sure there is no sound card, rather, a sound device on the Motherboard. Any suggestions? How might I get to BIOS (without restarting it on bootup) to check if it's turned on? Help would be appreciated.
I'm good with tweaking PC video games and jurry-rigging electrical equipment, but I'm no computer whiz. Try to be detailed.

If you haven't already done so, try restarting the system to see if the audio problem corrects itself. If that doesn't do it, try reinstalling the driver. I doubt it would become disabled, but to check, try tapping the F1 key immediately during startup to access the BIOS (some models use F10).
