Comment:

Put together a new computer and the sound is not working. I have tried two diffrent cards and the intigrated (asus p4s800) sound but they all do the same thing. Under "sound an audio divices" it says there is "no audio device". There is though, drivers and all. It also says there is a recording device but no playback. did i forget to do something here?

What sound cards have you tried? What does it say when you go to Device Manger?

Could it be something as simple as your mute boxes being checked? What is your onboard sound?

Always check the obvious. First, stick with the integrated sound...you can be pretty certain it works with XP and it's certainly compatible with your motherboard! Now for the obvious.

Are the speakers plugged into the right jack?

Are the speakers turned on and the volume turned up?

Have you clicked the speaker icon in your task bar (or the audio control software icon) to check to see if the volume levels are up and that the sound is not muted?

All simple things, and all simple to overlook.

everything is pluged in and all volumes are up and there is still nothing. i wish it was that simple. i am trying to get the intigrated sound to work now so there is no other sound card right now, nothing conflicting. i am wondering is there some bios setting i might have overlooked?

Yes. Make sure your on-board sound is enabled in your bios.

Try going to asustek.com and looking for support for your P4S800 Mobo. I have an Asus P4S533 and have found their support helpful. If I think of anything I'll let you know. I'm curious as to what the problem may be so if you figure it out I'd like to know what it was. I'll check back. Good Luck

You don't have to check the BIOS to see if the onboard sound is enabled. If Windows can find it and install the drivers, then it's enabled. It if was disabled, it wouldn't show up in Device Manager at all.

I have been having the same problem with my newly installed winxp. As far as I can surmise, the system is asking for a mixer, which I presumed would come with the opsys but evidently not. Try downloading mixer.exe from driverguide.com (must register but it's free).
Best of luck...

Uninstall and reinstall multimedia....your sound device has to show up dev manager for this to work, otherwise it is a waste of time.

Your can search google for step by step instructions for doing this.
