If you have both a sound card and on-board sound, you need to uninstall the drivers for the on-board sound and disable it in BIOS Start-up.

I have the same problem. I am trying to install a new sound card, however windows (XP) is still detecting the on board sound card, which I have disabled from BIOS. Any idea how to do this otherwise?
