Computer is Gateway MFATXSTL ELP500C. Serial #002 532 5487, running Win XP Home w/certificate of authencity. I can't get sound. Computer upgraded to XP (I believe from Millenium or 2000). Sound card was Sound Blaster Live! I checked to make sure it was good. Installed it on other computer - it worked fine. Decided to install Sound Blaster Audigy. Same old thing no sound. Sound Blaster diagnostics say that every thing is good. Updated bios. MOBO has Intel AC'97 audio controller. Tryed alternately disabling and enabling it in bios. No sound either way. I'm giving this to a needy family that is homeschooloing a child. Got to have sound. Can you help me?

Remove the Sound card and restart then Go to Device Manager and uninstall everything under Sound Video and Game Controllers.
Shut down the Computer and install the Sound Card and reboot. Windows will detect the Card and install drivers. Be sure you have any Drivers specific to the Card available.
What's wrong with using the AC'97 onboard sound.? Less problems for the new owner.
There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Thank you for your advice, Device manager didn't give options for removal of some things such as codecs. Had to go into properties of each and remove line by line. When reinstalling, XP asked for certain files, so I stopped at that point and installed the installation that came with Audigy. Still Legacy folders in device manager were empty. Still no sound. What do I do with AC'97 which keeps showing up after reboot?
