Sound Blaster Live problems

Comment:

I recently acquired a sound blaster live sound card (platinum 5.1). I was already running XP so I thought I would give it a try to make it run under XP. But I have a few problems.

1) It seems that when it wants to engage the high end sound drivers it reboots. Whenever I go into one of my games to configure the sound support it automatically reboots. I don't even get a BSOD.

2) Two threads seem to be taking all processor time eax.exe and ctlauncher.exe. Is this normal? I don't think the processor should be running at 100% all the time.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Which drivers are you using? For now, I don't think you should be using Liveware. Just let XP install the drivers it has and then do a windows update to get the latest drivers. I assume creative will release a new Liveware for XP.

I am using the W2K drivers but I will uninstall live!ware because the 2 threads taking up 100% of my proc time just isn't acceptable.

When I installed liveware for my (non 5.1) soundblaster I got a BSOD, so for now it's probably best to stick with the (still decent) windows drivers. I'm sure that when XP goes for sale in october you'll start seeing XP drivers for everything, and I'm 99% sure that Creative will release XP drivers for all their cards.

I got a good one here. I have a dual processor system. And when I run games using my Soundblaster Live card, I get the BSOD about IRQ NOT LESS OR EQUAL. So I checked my IRQ and it is 23. I could have swore the limit was 16!!! I cannot change it in the software, or can I? Can someone let me know? Thanks. Sysop69

Yeah same problems here with liveware on my live plat on my old system. I just ordered a new system yesterday with xp pre-installed and I just bought the new Soundblaster Audigy Plat Ex. I went to creative's website to look for drivers and they said mid to late Oct. So in the mean time i will try to use whatever xp installs and skip the liveware. Since this is a completely new soundcard my luck xp won't even take it and I will be stuck with the barebones soundcard I ordered the system with. My poor new Klispch promedia 5.1s will have to collect dust for a couple of weeks. boo hoo :(

You know I have my Eax and LiveWare working with XP corporate!!!! No prob and I am running an asus a7a266 with alimagik. 512 Megs of DDR. you know I found problems in the IRQ settings that windows xp natively put up with the printer putting the printer on IRQ7. I changed the IRQ to another setting rather than to leave it on auto and boom!!! My computer didn't just suddenly quit and restart! It stayed on you know I was actually scared to touch any of the lIve ware stuff becuz it would suddenly just stop and restart try out your irqs! Now my B&W Matrix are happy! good luck I think this is sound advice and now ctlaucher doesn't bestow 100% of the proc's power. Cheers

Can't get sound outa rear speakers ether but thats fine for now. when the XP drivers from SB come out they should allow you to use the rear speakers. you people should know by now that with every new OS release there are ALWAYS driver conflicts and problems expesioaly if you got XP before its even released hehe

You can enable rear speakers in the control panel under multimedia. Click advanced on the speakers and select the type of speakers you have. Works for me on quadrophonic with cambridge fps 1000.

I installed XP pro last week over the top of ME.It said that while my drivers will be updated by xp, my live ware wont work. Anyway My sound works most of the time but sometimes in Operation Flashpoint the sound goes to static and I have to alt tab to the desk top and back to make the sound work again.
Oh and here's a good one. If I play MP3's with windows audio player I get sound from 4 speakers, But if I install Winamp it stops the back speakers from working. Strange.
Anyway Creative should have drivers available in the next few day I hope. Apart from that XP Pro Rocks

Ok, I've been trying out quite a few things here with Windows XP since I got my hands on an OEM version. Now I have a few issues, though I havnt found solution to all of them yet.

WINDOWS XP: I used Norton Ghost version 7.0 to backup the original copy of Windows XP so I could do a complete system restore within 5 mins, and be up and running as if I just installed win Xp from the start. Works great and very handy.

SBLive 5.1: I've searched the Internet quite heavily and from what I found, Though Creative says Install your LIVEWARE 3.0 first then install the XP Drivers they have posted on their site. I get two errors:

1) I get a DEVDR error or something Like that I can't remember for sure, but also when shutting down the system, It will tell me its trying to end that program. I end up having to click on End to complete my shut down.
2) When ever I try to click on something on the Creative Bar at the top, it disappears and goes back to HIDE option right as I get ready to click on it.

P.S. System would sometimes reboot on shutdown and not goto complete shutdown.

SO MY ADVICE IS THIS: I ghosted my system back to original settings, as if I just installed XP, and installed only the CREATIVE DRIVERS that are offered on their site. My system is working fine. "Don't Bother installing Live Ware 3.0 or you'll have problems. I'm sure they will come out with something new for XP". I heard it will be called Creative Ware and no longer Live Ware. Keep your eyes open for it.

CREATIVE DXR3: I've also did some research on this and found a few ways around it. Obviously Microsoft didnt offer the support for the DXR3 for DVD play back. Here's what you can do if you want to play DVD on your system.

Hollywood Plus Drivers & DVD Player
LINK: http://www.sigmadesigns.com/support/downloads.htm

1) Download the Hollywood Plus drivers which is the Same Identical card as the DXR3 Decoder card by Creative. You'll want to do this manually of course. There will be to ZIP files. Number 1 File is the Drivers. Goto your System Icon thru your control panel and then Hardware, then Device Manager. Double click on Hardware that applies to your DXR3 Card. Then click on Drivers, the Update drivers, and tell it that "You want to pick a driver" XP will not find it compatible for some reason. But if you do it manually it will work fine. Once you've done that. You can then Unzip number 2 File and Install the Application which will be the DVD Player. Then in the Diagnostics you can choose AC3 if you want to have your surround sound setup. Also make sure if you have surround sound speakers to access the Multimedia Icon and goto Advanced button on Speakers and setup the proper speakers, such as 5.1 for mine.

NOTE: If you wish not to use this DVD Player, you can also use POWER DVD 3.0 or WINDVD 2.3 or 3.0 Trial is out now. They all worked for me.

I hope this helps most of you out with maybe some issues until Creative brings out New Drivers and Software to update these bugs.....

But people....remember...this is a new operating system, and we have to be patient while they get these drivers and software completed. There's been quite a few changes since the Beta Releases. BUT WINDOWS XP is probably the most stable Operating System that Windows has brought out to the Home User. Yeah I know Windows NT and 2000 were nice too...but this is the best home user system I've seen personally.

BEST OF LUCK !

ACE

Same problem here. I´m using WinXP with an Audigy card running the newest XP drivers..
This issue didnt apear with the old win2k drivers tho..so i guess its no hardware related problem. It´s really annoying becaus i play games with headphones on so its always like a punch in the face when this highpitched noise is played. Its just a very short loud "krchitz!" like sound and apears when i switch in and out of ie. halflife. Dunno if it has something to do with soundbuffer switches or whatever..so if anybody found a solution help would be greatly apreciated <:).

Hi everyone-

I have a SB Live 5.1, and I am running XP pro (build 2600 aka final). Everything was running perfectly until I upgraded to Microsoft's "update" for the SBL. Then, I lost my mixers. I uninstalled everything in safe mode, and then rebooted. It installed the default drivers, rebooted, nothing. I installed the new creative drivers, rebooted, nothing. The computer sees the card PERFECTLY, but it does not let me choose anything under the various tabs... like "default sound playback devices." It says "no playback devices." BUT, my computer sees the card, as well as the mixers, etc.

I have tried other cards in my computer, and all of them produce the same result.

Thanks!

It seems as though everyone's having problems w/ their Sound Blaster Live card. I too am having problems. I got everything installed and Xp recognizes my card (which is always good). The problem is that I can't use the speakers program to configue my speakers. I can't get surround sound and only one of my four speakers even works (the others don't produce any sound. If anyone knows of how to get around this let me know. I already got the update from the Creative Labs site. What's next with Xp?

I had same prob- check your IRQ's, I had a conflict with my LAN card. I installed a different LAN card, and now i get sound. I recently found a problem with my SCSI controller and my USB mouse. IRQ problem.

Now i get stupid BSOD about IRQ not less than or equal. SB owners, check your LAN card if you have one, and try a different one if you can. Worked for me.

Well, I decided to mess around with the sound card again and came across actual sound. Guess what, no sound from the rear speakers unless I go to the sound menu and put it on 5.1 (even though I only have 4 speakers). And then of course only 3 speakers work (my main right speaker w/ the control volume doesn't). And to top things off the sound has so much static during games w/ intense gunfire, lightning, etc. Any help?

oh Dear , SB live ... I have tied every trick in the book ( or suggestion on the net).
Is the really a cure for SB live conflicts under any OS . i have tried my Sb live on two Mobo,s (different chipsets). And got them running fine. Only to be defeated by adding some other hardware or software , and back to square one. I have noticed that the Live is ok untill the fancy EAX is installed.
So Come on Creative address the problem. or lose your customers. i am looking for a new sound system :-( real tired here. any suggestions

Hey Guys..If you are still having problems maybe I can help you guys out.. At first I installed Windows XP and I have the Sound Blaster Live.. and NO sounds came out at all after installing the driver and so on.. If you have that problem my friends, I have a solution for you.. Go to control panel, then sounds..Click on Change the Speaker Settings.. Now on top, Click on the "Audio" Tab.. After doing so, set the DEFAULT SETTING to SB Live! Wave Device, ok? Now it should work :) and if you can't get all your four speakers working, you just have to pick the speakers you have under the "Volume" tab.. Well that's all folks.. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

So it looks like a lot of people are having trouble werkin' their SB Live! cards under Windows XP. A lot of people seem to be having hardware conflicts. Why do I say this?

Common case #1: Your computer crashes and your speakers are screaching the last processed sound. This means that your soundcard has run into a conflict with another piece of hardware. Usually, this is an IRQ conflict, or interrupt request conflict. A couple of ways to resolve this issue. (1) shuffle your PCI cards. Keeping your Video and Sound Card relatively "far" apart (as many slots between them as possible) is generally good to do. At least try to keep one or two slots between them. These slots can have cards in them, but keep your Vid and Sound cards at a distance. They might try to share IRQ 'cause of close PCI proximity. (2) Onboard sound is still "enabled". Simple solution: Go to your bios and disable it. Fool. (3) IRQ sharing with ACPI has gone terribly wrong (very common). A solution to this is to disable ACPI, but be VERY careful. Performance will change and windows settings should be changed too. -=DISCUSS THIS OPTION WITH CREATIVE TECHS BEFORE DOING IT=- Otherwise, look for the simple solutions like drivers, power, and ... PEBKAC's. LOL.
