Hi! I got an evaluation sample of Windows XP Professional edition and I was very exited to install it to my computer. However, when I tried to install it, I was met with a list of problems that Windows XP claimed is hardware related. Some of these problems which I copied are as follows:

Please note that some of the following entries might be software that is registered as hardware.

Biometric
U.are.U fingerprint device by DigitalPersona, Inc

Modem
Conexant SoftK56 Data,Fax,Voice,Speakerphone PCI Modem

Printer
Canon LBP-800 Laser Printer

Printers
Canon LBP-800

Sound, video and game controllers
Studio PCTV USB/Radio (NTSC)

Scanners or Digital Cameras That Might Not Work
Setup did not recognize the following scanners or digital cameras. Before upgrading, check the packaging that came with each device to see if it supports Windows XP, or contact the device manufacturer. Reinstall each device when Setup is complete, using the software that came with the device.

ASUS Frame Capture Source
Pinnacle TwainCap PCTV USB/Radio

Software Compatibility Issues
Software That Does Not Support Windows XP
Setup has found programs on your computer that are incompatible with (that is, they do not work with) Windows XP. Contact your software vendors to obtain updates or Windows XP-compatible versions. If you don't update these programs before you upgrade, the programs will not work after the upgrade is completed.

ASUS Digital VCR (on the Start menu)

Before you upgrade to Windows XP, you should remove any incompatible programs if you can. After the upgrade, uninstall for these programs might not work. Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel can help you uninstall most programs. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Add/Remove Programs.
Software That Must Be Reinstalled
The following programs need to be reinstalled after the upgrade, because they use different files and settings in Windows XP.

Nero - Burning Rom

to name a few.

After these problems were posted, I still proceeded to continue with the installation. I restarted several times because it seemed that XP hung when it is trying to check my hardware configuration.
Finally, I was able to finish the installation & eveything seemed fine until I decided to connect to the Internet to look for an updated driver for my printer. The message says dialing but when I checked my phone, I was met with a dial tone. I don't know what the problem is... Will anybody help me???

Thank you very much!

I upgraded from 98se and had a few incompatibilities myself. The only things that wouldnt work were:

powerdvd
adaptec ezcd 4.0
and a few microsoft published games

I did use a few win2000 drivers for my dsl modem and a few others. But I found that xp had most of the drivers within it to run most of my other stuff. Like an older HP Deskjet 695c printer.
I cant believe that list you have though. You can always goto add/remove programs and uninstall xp and start over, check for drivers and whatnot, and go from there. I doubt this helped much but......good luck.

I had the same problem with my modem and with communications port 3 so I couldn't install my internal modem. I have also been advised to format my harddrive and do a clean install. More things will work!

It is unblievable how fast people are with the advice to erase and reformat your hard drive.

Dan, before you give that advise, you really should do your home work.

This is the very last possibility if nothing else helps.

It is basically the declaration of total surrender.

I think my name says it all. When changing operating systems you are a fool if you don't perform a clean install from a freshly reformatted hdd. You will keep any incompatibilities to a minumum this way. Anybody who has done thier homework knows this

come ON people.

first of all did any of you read the message ?

the problems are the following:
- your modem is a SOFTk56 modem by conexant/rockwell : these do NOT work under XP without extra drivers that aren't available from either conexant nor rockwell anymore.

- the PCTC card you have is fairly new and as of yet not supported by microsoft. Here you will have to wait for pinnacle to finally update their drivers to xp standards (this might take a while .. i have been bugging them for 3 months)

my suggestion:

IF you have room / a second partition or several hd's THEN erase a hd / partition , disconnect EXTRA cards and equipment from your pc (PCTV , modem , printer, etc). Reinstall windows XP. After the install is finished, reconnect the equipment one by one every time rebooting the pc and checking whether windows recognises the equip. Search for new drivers on the internet. if you can't find xp drivers grab the NT 5.0 (win2000) drivers they usually work fine.

Good luck

Canon are a lasy bunch of bums. I asked them if there were any plans to develop drivers for there older laser printers. All they said is if it didn't come with the drivers, they aren't going to develop them, as it is to expensive.
