Sony VAIO won't go into Windows

My Sony VAIO laptop isn't working. It turns on okay and goes into Windows, but once it gets there, it says that Windows wasn't shut down properly and won't go anywhere else. Is there a simple fix to this? I can't edit any of the settings and have tried all the alternative methods they offer (safe mode etc.). I'm thinking a boot disk might work, but I'm not sure - haven't used one before. Any ideas?

doesn't the computer have a restore partition, which stores the system restore files? have you tried a system restore in system tools back to before this problem occurred?
