Comment:

I added a Sony DRU-190A internal DVD/CD drive to my computer this weekend. I also have a previously installed Pioneeer internal dvd/cd drive. I set the sony drive as the master and the pioneer drive as the slave. However everytime I try to copy any of my mp3s using the Sony drive, the burn process starts but then shortly after fails. Also, it does not tell me the reason why it failed. Can someone please help me solve this problem.

I intalled the nero software that came with the drive but that did not solve the problem.

The pioneer drive still works and I can copy mp3s usning that drive. The sony one is the problem.

Thanks.

Look at the event viewer for the error message that you aren't seeing otherwise.
Start, run, type eventvwr.msc

Also, look at the device manager in case there is a conflict there.

What does the summary box say when you boot it?
It should list the Sony as a secondary master.

If both drives are IDE, and they are both on the same controller chain (both on the same cable) then you will have problems.

Slow down the burning process also may allow you to burn without errors.

But, contrary to what you say, there is always error messages, look in the event viewer...thats what it's for...error messages, log messages, info messages, etc.

Well I am at work now, however I think both drives are IDE and they are both on the same controller chain (both on the same cable). Is this causing the problem? How would I resolve this issue? I only have one cable and one slot on the motherboard for the dvd drives.

Having both drives on the same cable will not cause problems, but it will slow down copying from one to the other.

Is reading from the drive working ok?

Yes reading from the drive is ok. I just can't understand why it fails when writing.

If the Pioneer and/or Sony drive is/are IDE connected.....
Fairly recent DVD burner or DVD/CD combo burner drives that are capable of 16X DVD +R or DVD -R or greater are capable of UDMA66 data transfer burst speeds and must be connected to an 80 wire data cable in order to work properly. Your Sony drive definately requires such a cable.
(the connectors on the cable and the drive are always 40 "pin" whether you have an 80 or a 40 wire data cable).
....

If you don't have your main chipset drivers loaded yet, your Sony drive may not be properly recognized as a drive capable of burning.
See response 4 in your other subject (thread):

....

You are likely to have problems if have any component pieces of two or more burning programs are loaded at the same time. E.g. some load a component piece on Windows Startup by default.
Nero often loads InCd support by default when you install it's software the default way, and if so there is often an icon in your taskbar, near the lower right corner, for it. If your other burning software also loads something on Windows Startup, or even if it doesn't, the two programs are likely to clash.
You could try un-installing InCd in Add/Remove Programs, since most people don't use it, to see if your problem goes away, but that may not be enough.

You don't need two burning software programs - either one should support burning on either drive, unless the software that came with the Pioneer is a lot older and can't recognize the Sony drive properly.
If un-installing InCD or disabling it from loading on Windows Startup doesn't help, un-install the burning program that came with the pioneer, or un-install Nero.
.....

All optical drives are sensitive as to which burnable media (CDs or DVDs, brands and types) you use in them..........
Pioneer drives are often pickier about that than most.

A post that large is likely to get this whole subject (thread) deleted - that's certainly the case for HxxxxTxxxx logs, and yours is also quite large. Most of it, if not all of it, is useless information to me/us.

Check out all the stuff in response 6.
NOTE that you may have to try different media, and if you are using el-cheapo media, such as one of many disks in a stack with no cases, some of them are likely to be defective - that's why they're so cheap.
If everything looks right in your situation, if you can try the Sony drive on another computer, do that. If it doesn't work properly on that other computer either, the drive is faulty - return it to where you got it if they have a limited time exchange policy and get another one, or rma it to the manufacturer which may not be worth the shipping cost, or throw it away and get another one.

Aegis,

"Having both drives on the same cable will not cause problems, but it will slow down copying from one to the other.

Is reading from the drive working ok?"

Is this NOT a problem?
So, yes it CAN be done, but is NOT recommended and NOT problem-free.

Did some more testing - reading from the drive is ok. However burning from the drive always fails when both drives are on the same IDE cable. If I install the drive on the IDE cable by itself, it burns without failure

The most likely cause of your problem is you have a damaged IDE cable.
You must use an 80 wire one because at the very least the Sony drive requires it in order to work properly.

It is common to un-intentionally damage IDE data cables, especially while removing them - the 80 wire ones are more fragile. What usually happens is the cable is ripped at either edge and the wires there are either damaged or severed, often right at a connector or under it's cable clamp there, where it's hard to see - if a wire is severed but it's ends are touching, the connection is intermittant.
Another common thing is for the data cable to be separated from the connector contacts a bit after you have removed a cable - there should be no gap between the data cable and the connector - if there is press the cable against the connector to eliminate the gap.
80 wire data cables are also easily damaged at either edge if the cable is sharply creased at a fold in the cable.

Try another data cable if in doubt.

I dont know what the hell is wrong with Sony DRU-190A, I'm begining to loose my faith in Sony, this is the third replacment I'm getting and none of them burn. it just fails befor even start.
some of the things I've tried:
updateing the firmware that did it for one time burn.
had to change mainboard cpu ram and .. so
tried useing other application like clone dvd rather than just nero
and as i mentioned this is the third replacement not working

One drive defective - possible.
Three drives defective - virtually impossible. You should have come to that conclusion when you got the second one.
Something else is wrong.

Did you check out all the stuff in response 6?

Did you look for error messages in the event viewer (see response 1) after you tried to burn?

Do you have another computer you can try this on, or can you try it on a friend's computer?

If you were not having problems with anything else, it would not have been caused by your ram.
