Someone sharing a IP address on my

Specs: Windows XP Home, 1.5 ghz 512 ram

Ya, somethings I get an error message from windows saying:
"Error, someone else is sharing your IP address"

Is someone hacking on? I have MAC address enabled (only MAC addresses on the router can log on), and I also have WEP (other computers won't support WPA), and other computers have a hard time finding the network if I'm not broadcasting the network name or everyou call it.

Is this just a gliche in windows hopefully?

It must have came from Windows messenger which have annoyed multitude of people. Turn it off and it will go away. It's Windows spamming you.

Or, it's an actual error. This sometimes happens when you're using dynamic IP resolution, aka a DHCP server in your router.

To solve it, click Start and then click Run on the computer with the error. Type ipconfig /renew and click OK. After a few seconds, a new IP should be leased to this computer and your IP conflicts should be solved.

Well my opinion is that you don't get the message Error, someone else is sharing your IP address if the actual problem was dynamic IP resolution.

It's not an opinion XpUser. It's fact. Duplicate ip will generate a error not like the one posted and give the mac address of the other offending party.

I stand corrected. Thanks wanderer. We all learn something everyday, don't we?

Actually I was agreeing with you [your opinion was fact not fiction] and disagreeing with the post about dhcp :-)
