Some mouse clicks do nothing

A friend of mine is having trouble with Windows XP and mouse clicks. Sometimes Windows does not recognize his mouse clicking on desktop icons or inside of programs (such as Outlook). The cursor still responds to mouse movement and some clicks do still register.
He said that a reboot makes the problem go away, but he has had to start rebooting on a daily basis because the problem occurs that frequently. Both left- and right-clicks are effected. He is using a basic wired mouse (PS/2 I believe). Since reboots affect the problem, I figure it's a WinXP issue.
Any ideas what the problem could be? Any suggestions for a solution?

Could just be a worn out mouse. Know how old it is?

Not exactly sure how old it is, but it's a Microsoft Intellimouse (ball mouse) with a scroll wheel.
So, the mouse is probably fairly old, but I don't see why rebooting would have an effect on the problem if the source of the problem was the mouse alone.
I'll try to get him to test with another (newer) mouse to see if the problem persists.
Thanks, Carl

Spyware/malware can slow the system down to the point that mouse clicks will work in slow motion, if at all.
Have your friend run CCleaner and some other malware cleaner like spybot S&D or malwarebytes.
