I had this problem some days ago on my laptop. This is how I kicked it.

1. Get a bootable WinXP CD.
2. Insert it at starting and let it run from the cd ( either making cd drive first boot)
On th welcome setup screen, press "R" for recovery console. it should give you the prompt.

Npw type "chkdsk /r" ( Chkdsk space r)and enter leave it to finish. Now restart by typing "exit" and pres enter. It should work.

If it doesnt follow same but type "chkdsk /p" and enter. If it finishes. type "fixboot X:" ( X is the drve letter) and enter. after type exit to restart. It should work. After booting to windows try unstalling any software or hardware you installed.

Good Lick

I've tried all those things in the past with no luck on clients machines. My normal responce to clients when I run into this problem is "did you have anything important on the drive"

Not that your advice is bad, it is not but a lot of times you cannot recover from the UBV error.

Hey NaNa Yaw you are a genius!

I've been trying for days to retrieve files from my second partition with Windows XP installed which display the BSOD with unmountable_boot_volume. I was unsuccessful with the recovery console so many times. Had to use my backup XP installation on a diffrent partition to carry on until today.

YOUR advice has definitely helped!
I did chkdsk /p which checked that installation and than did the fixboot thing and now my corrupt installation is up and running!

I'd just like to say Thank-You for that crucial bit of advice, I know it was very short and simple, but TBH that's all it took.

Ryan.

Well, If your Winxp cd is not bootable, you can use the WinXP boot disks (6 Floppies) to boot. But make sure when you are at the command prompt, the Winxp cd must be in your drive. It will search for the "autochk.exe" file from the cd.

All the best.

Note to KTTD,
this is for the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME problem when you upgrade or install a new hardware or etc.

Good luck guys.
