I recently had a problem in trying to get my main PC (running Win XP Home) to read an external USB 2.0 Flash Drive (a PQI 256Mb Cool Drive). The PC detected the drive but could not access it (Explorer froze). I tried a number of solutions suggested on this site (deinstalling all USB controllers and reinstalling them; disconnecting all other USB devices in case there was a power drain; and so on). Unfortunately none of these worked. However a poster on another forum suggested that I try running the Autofix.exe utility (available on the Microsoft Support website)which corrects problems with Autoplay not detecting removable media. It worked!
