Hello all. Im having a problem. I found some SOL files on my computer. (the SOL files are used by an online chating website i use.) I accidently change what the SOL file opens with.

The sol files on my computer are suppose to open saying: PLEASE PICK A PROGRAM TO OPEN THIS FILE WITH.

I changed it so it opens with the internet.
I would like to change it back so it says PLEASE PICK A PROGRAM TO OPEN THIS FILE WITH.

If you know which program that you want to open these files, do the following:

Right click a SOL file
Select 'Open with'
Select 'Choose Program'
Click on the 'Browse' button
Browse to the correct program
Select it and click on 'Open'
Select the 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
Click 'OK'

@ kitty

I do not mess with the Registry, only until I do careful thoughts about what I want to do. After much thinking of your problem, I find the only solution is a REGEDIT.

Highlight HKEY_USERS,
then do CTRL + F,
then type openwith
Then you may find a list of file extention folders below that.
I could not give you the entire Registry location because mine my be different yours.

The idea is to Edit the SOL folder to give the "Open With..." notice again. Compare that folder with others, and Folder Options "File Types" tab....to determine what to Delete.

You may have to live with it.
Edit the Registry at your own risk.

kittybobjr, Windows XP doesn't have the ability to open .sol files. What you can try is to go into Folder Options>File Types tab, scroll down to sol, hilite it, click the Change button, take the checkmark out of "allways use the selected program to open this kind of file", click OK/Apply/OK. This should give you the "Open with" option again for sol files.

Go thru the links/threads at the link below as you need a seperate program to open or edit sol files. It appears that some are trying to hack those sol files that xat.com chat places on their computers for dubious reasons.

I gave basic information for how to get rid of use this program to open this file type, and return to Open With... selection.

I do give you precise How To information because Registry is tricky.
