My daughter has windows XP (upgrade from ME, was added before ME was wiped) New graphic card, not sure of specs for this. 900Mgz processor and 256Mb ram. Apart from the processor, everything is an upgrade from what she had. A supposedly PC expert has installed all upgrades and PC ran fine before all this, but now PC is freezing on a regular basis. The only option she has is to press power button to force PC to close down. Nothing else works when it freezes. (If I get hold of this so called expert I will throttle him)
Any suggestions please?

Dont blame the expert, these things can happen on brand new computers.

In order to have any chance of guessing what the problem is more information is needed. The motherboard and video card. Software installed. Power supply. Internet connection? What was your daughter doing when it froze.

Was XP installed over the top of ME. If so that could be a cause of your problems. If ME was wiped, why wasn't it wiped before XP was installed?

I have no idea about the motherboard or the video card. How do I find out? Would belarc advisor list it?
XP was installed before ME wiped so files could be saved. There is not a lot of software installed. She has Paint Shop Pro and vital stuff like AVG, Zone alarm, spybot and Adaware. The freezing is completely random and can happen whether online or off
Internet connection is dial up with HSP56 MR 56k modem
Sorry I can't give more information, but I will try and find out the rest of the info you need
Thanks for your help

What you SHOULD have done was backup all your data, wipe ME than do a fresh install of XP. That way windows system files would remain intact (but nevermind :o).

I suggest you put the XP cd in the cd-rom drive and do a system repair: -

start>run> type in sfc /scannow
(notice space after sfc)

If that doesn't work go to bios with cd in drive and force a system repair from there.
(Screen will show all the options, select repair)

check the windows refresh settings: -

Right click desktop>properties>settings tab>advanced>monitor tab>screen refresh rate

Should be @ 72 or 75 Hertz.

What did the guy upgrade?

Display drivers?
Windows update?
Service Pack 1?

Hope That Helps for Now.
Kevin.
