This morning I turned on my computer and adter the HP invent logo came up, i got some weird stuff on the screen(didn't have time to read it), and then a square-shaped smiley face at the bottom. I had to leave so i turned off the computer and came back, and when i turn it on, it just gives my that smiley face. if i press any keys, the cursor flies around the screen and the smiley face comes back. I really don't want to do a system restore i have important stuff on the computer... but i can't even access it. writing this from another computer. PLEASE HELP thanks.

It sounds like the virus could be affecting the BIOS... do bootdisks work?

Use the web the way it was meant to be used. Get Firefox.

It doesn't seem to be letting me start in safe mode, and well, here goes a really stupid question: what are boot disks...

when u power on your computer hit f8 ramdomly on your keyboard u should get a menu that has the choice to boot in safe mode . ..
boot disk = http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

but if your in ntfs forget about doing this with a boot disk .

It won't let me boot in safe mode. Right after the HP logo comes up, the happy face appears. I've tried pressing F8 thru out this at different times several times and when the smiley face is there... nothing works.

will a boot disk delete my work?

No, a boot disk is only an utility to give you access to your files in dos mode ..
so you can backup your file before a format ..
u can try to delete that prog in dos mode (with a boot disk) only if u know whats the name of that smiley face prog..,
but if u see that face even before windows loads then i suggest u backup ur files (with the boot disk on another disk) then format and reset the bios .. well thats a big job to do .. if you dont know much about computer find someone who does and ask him to do it for you. have a nice day

Jennifer, I am curious to know what exactly you did with a startup disk and how it helped to get your pc booted up.
Make sure you go to HP's website and see if there is a bios update for your system. Good luck!

Well, i put in the boot dsk, turned on the computer, it prompted me to put in the others... then it asked if i wanted to do a system restore, and since i was afraid that would delete my work, i said no, and it was like, blah blah blah, reboot computer? and i said yes... and it worked. very odd, yes? i didn't even really use the boot disks, i just ran them. My computer has been fine since, but I'm worried, I hope I got rid of the virus completely. I did find some things that tasklist.org said were related to virus, so i took those off of start-up.
