S.M.A.R.T. stands for Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology. S.M.A.R.T. technology was developed by a number of major hard disk drive manufacturers to increase the reliability of hard drives. It is a technology that enables the PC to predict the future failure of hard disk drives. S.M.A.R.T. technology has become an industry standard for hard drive manufacturers.

Hard drives fail, often without any warning. But in this case you are lucky because you do have a warning. You would do well to do what the message says, backup your important data. You don't know how long this opportunity will last.

I would buy a new hard drive and use the software that comes with it to transfer everything over to the new one.......Then toss the old one.

It's easy to do before the failing hd dies.
