How do I disable S.M.A.R.T if when I connect the drive that is giving me the S.M.A.R.T status error it will not let the computer boot up. I can go to bios, but I cannot find the option for S.M.A.R.T. I am trying to back up the data on the drive that is going bad. This is a back up drive and when I disconnect it the computer boots up fine.

Get a new hard drive and install xp then slave the old drive to save your data. SMART is telling you the drive is failing.

S.M.A.R.T. is a hardware monitoring system built in to the hard drive. It reads the temp and proformance factors of the drive. When something falls out of specs bad enough, it alerts the system of inpending failure. If you get a S.M.A.R.T. alert it's "smart" to pay heed and back up the drive straight away. It's not real "smart" to turn it off. If you turn off this most helpful feature, then the only way you're going to know a problem has occured is when the drive poops out...

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

I would add that smart does not prevent a drive from booting. It is just a reporting tool. Clearly there is something wrong with the drive. Slaving the drive is an excellent suggestion.

The drive that is giving me the S.M.A.R.T message is the slave drive. Is there any hope in recovering the data from the slave drive if it will not boot up? The master drive works fine.
