-No matter how many programs i take out of my startup, it seems, XP just keeps booting up (hot or cold) slower and slower. all the programs i recently installed, i have uninstalled them and still to no avail.

Go to Start / Search--->under All files and folders, look for these three files and delete all except one (of each) in the Windows\System32 folder [ tftp svchost dllhost]. Evidence of possible virus activity. Particularly Msblaster and variants.
