I have discovered WinXp acts really weird. I have a P4 2.0Ghz laptop that I use on two different networks. Both have a DHCP server. However, only one of these networks has a Novell Netware server. I use the default Microsoft Netware client.
Now, doing little things such as opening small images (20k), word files, html pages, and even 1k text files can take between 10-20 seconds when I'm not connected to the network with netware support. Note: these are tasks that should not require the network as all the files are on the local drive. Having said that I have noticed WinXP soes send as broadcast every time I open a file on my HDD :/. So I came to the conclusion that it must be my Netware client that is doing the mischef. This is however not the case. Removing the netware client does not resolve these issues.
However, removing the standard Microsoft Networks Client does solve the issue!!!
I can do anything now (regardless wheather I'm connected to a network or not) at the speed I would expect. However, no more access to Windows shares :(
Now, I though this was an isolated case but as fate has it my other client on my netware-free network is also running WindowsXP and it too experiences "lag" issues. There is no Netware involved here!
I am absolutely baffeled ...
