Slow Startup Analysis?

Specs: Windows XP
Greetings:

Although my system runs OK the startup is painfully slow.

I would like to determine where it is spending so much time. Is there a way to display the startup process so that when it stalls on a step one can see what it is trying to initialize?

Instead of the splash screen I would prefer to see the command line strings during bootup so that I can see what it is doing when it stalls.

Thanks in advance for any helpful advise!

That would sure be a handy utility to have.
An alternative might be to use the msconfig startup tab to deselect any suspected applications.
