Just wanted to see if anyone has heard of this before.

On my new Dell Dimension 2400 (onboard video), I've got a problem where I right-click on a large file (greater than 300 MB) and the file system freezes up. The right click menu does not come up, and explorer.exe will lock up unless I switch to another task.

I've defragmented my hard drive and installed more RAM (from 256 to 784). Did not help.

The only work-around I've discovered is this: I left-click on the file, wait a few seconds until the file description pops up, then right-click on it. For some reason, that prep work helps the right-click to register.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks for the replies.

#1 - That site looks promising. I'm definitely going to try it out when I get home.

#2 - In general, the computer runs pretty fast. I'm not sure if DMA is on/off. If it's off, it will be interesting to see if turning it on fixes it. Again, have to try it when I get home.

Apparently, I'm not the only one having this sort of problem. But it's hard to sort out the exact symptoms from others.

In any case, my DMA is on, but I still think it might be a hard drive thing somehow.

I used the update for the Verisign CA, but that didn't seem to help. My impression is that helps ppl who have a slow right click in their browser? That's what I got from reading other ppl's problems.

Anyways, I'll keep on doing some research. thx

I had a similar problem which was driving me crazy.
I've searched high and low and found nothing relating to it that worked. I then broke down and started removing all kinds of un-needed apps on my pc. Nothing helped!
I then used RegMon, a free app from SysInternals that monitors anything accessing the registry. Turns out I had previously ran an exe off of a computer which is no longer available on the LAN. XP remembered that I had used that app to open certain file types and was checking to see if it was there. I ended up having to wait until the network connection timed out (old computer is gone) before the context menu would come up.

HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY!! No Format for me. :P
