Comment:

Lately I have noticed that my computer is taking forever to do simple tasks
such as opening a program. I can do something like click on "My Computer"
and it takes almost a minute for anything to happen. It used to be
instantanious (sp).
I have done a disc cleaning, defrag, and scan disc, virus scan, ad aware
scan. I have 28.0GB free space and 5.30 used.
Thank you to anyone who can help,
Lady R
Here are my specs...
Compaq Presario 5310US
Windows XP Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
Intel Celeron CPU
1200MHz
1.20 GHz, 512MB of RAM

Try CTRL+ALT+DEL to see whats running. Chances are that there is another program running in the background. Try using CoolMon to monitor the processor percentages.

I did the ctrl/alt/del and found only IE and Outlook running in the applications tab. I found a LOT of things running in the Processes tab. Too many to post here. I wish there was a way to attach. I would do a screen shot of it and post it. I could do a screen shot and upload it and do it that way...brb...

Ok. Here is a screenshot of my task manager.
Please let me know if there is anything "bad" in it.

Go to task manager and see what processes are your resource hogs.
Then go to blackviper.com and copy the windows XP service configuration sheet which will tell you what processes are safe to disable, set to manual etc.
Downlaod winpatrol (free) to monitor and control startup programs.
Empty Prefetch folder and temp files in windows and reduce browser cache size
If this behavior is recent as you state, and your machine is free of spy/mal/adware look to recently installed programs and applications

I'm always up for hugs!!!

Go to Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and go to the processes tab and look at the percentage of each process. The highest percentage is usually the cause. Enter the processes name into a search engine to find out what it is and to find out if it's safe to end it or not! The net should tell what you need to know.

To: Spankingmissdaisy,
No, that didn't help. However, there was a printer installed that I didn't know about and since I do not have a printer...I deleted it. Also, system idle is the highest cpu usage.

To: HIT,
I tried that but system idle process is the one using the highest cpu. I can't delete it..

if you want to know which process is ok to diable. go to windowsstartup.com and download the freeware windows startup inspector. iam using it right now and it gives me an explanation of which process is used by the system and which is not recommended and which is user's choice. its pretty user-friendly. try it

Have you tried disabling the progs in the system tray?

Try disabling them all and them using the pc for a bit. If it's okay, try enabling them one by one to see which one is the one using up all resources. Also do you have Norton installed and what progs have you installed latley?

;-)
