OS: Windows XP Prof w/Rollup
CPU/Ram: Intel Celeron 633Mhz/192M
Comment:

This might be a hardware question, but I just installed XP Prof. w/Rollup 1 and my computer is slower then ever, even though I upgraded the memory from 64MB to 192MB. I was thinking of replacing my CPU and installing a Video Card, but I don't know if that's possiable on my motherboard. I have a Cognac Motherboard with Intel Celeron 633Mhz, and it's FC-PGA Socket 370 with Bus speed of 100Mhz. Also has Intel 810 Chipset. Anything I can do with this system or should I just get a new one?

Thank You for your help...

Is that an HP Pavilion..LOL

Forget any upgrade on that PC.On the bright side you may be able to use it as a heavy duty doorstop guaranteed to hold any door securely in any position..

I can think of two things that you can do to hopefully speed up Windows XP.
The first one would be to click on the start button and click on the run menu. Typr in MSCONFIG and then click on OK. When msconfig opens, click on the most right hand tab called STARTUP. Uncheck every checkmark in startup and then click on APPLY. You will be required to reboot. You will receive a window after rebooting, insert a CHECK MARK and click on OK.

2. I recommend that you use the defragmenter program. Click on the start button. Right click on MY COMPUTER with the right mouse button and choose MANAGE. Click on Manage and choose the disk defragmenter on the far left side. When the program opens choose DEFRAGMENT and let your computer finish this very slow program.
Have Fun,
Richard

I wouldn't say you need a new one unless you plan on doing much gaming or video editing, or other processor hogging things... Just make sure you have the least possible number of programs running by de-selecting them under "startup" in msconfig as described above, also in msconfig you can disable many of the services that xp runs that you probably don’t need... you'll find an explanation of the individual services and if they can be safely disabled here: http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/servicesxp.htm another thing that might help is right click on my computer, select properties, then select the advanced tab. click on the settings button under performance and click on "adjust for best performance".

I run XP Pro on a Pentium II 450mhz with 384mb of ram with no problems whatsoever it runs almost as fast as 98 did and much more reliably. so you should be ok with 633mhz... but like I said before it all depends on what you want to do with it.
