Here's our network setup:
xp and w98 pc's connecting to w2000 domain. My problem is the xp machines are very slow when opening excel files from a shared server drive. The w98 pc's do not have this problem. Any ideas?

Greg,
Check to make sure the NIC in the XP machine is set to 100Mbps. Its possible that it's set to 10Mbps, and transferring or viewing across the network from that machine will be slower if it is.
I would have more solutions for you, but I'm posting from school on a Win2000 machine with limited access rights. Hope this helps.
