slow network connection in Win XP

I have two machines networked via crossover cable, both running win XP pro. Files will only transfer at 14k/sec and after about 10-15minutes of super slow file transferring the destination computer loses its network connection. All hardware and cables are fine.
Both machines are using TCP/IP 10.0.0.1/255.255.255.0 - 10.0.0.2/255.255.255.0 with WinXP Internet Connection Sharing (internet dial-up account). There is no problem browsing the internet on either machine. No 3rd party firewall software has been installed and from what i can tell, the winXP firewall has not been enabled. The cable length is about 2 metres (I had also tried a longer cable but no luck.)
There have been posts by others about similar issues with XP but i'm yet to find a magic fix that works.
