Slow mouse response

Specs: XP, P4/512

I installed a Logitech Click! optical mouse about six months ago and it has performed well until now. The mouse recently began responding between fast, as expcected, and slow (up to 45 seconds to respond to both scroll and repeated button cliks). It responds differently, depending on the program that's open. Some screens such as Desktop and Word respond quickly and others vary between quick and slow. Batteries are new, mouse software has been reinstalled with current updates and there is plenty of available RAM. Surface does not matter. Anyone have some thoughts to resolve this problem?

Herb, my first thought's a nasty. There's a virus around that specifically targets a mouse. Another thing to check is to make sure you don't have a bunch of stuff running in the background as that can REALLY slow things down.
