I decided to install XP Servive Pack 1 since there were several hundred small fixes to the original XP Pro release. Ever since then I have had this irratating situation. When I re-boot and then login for the first time, everything starts normally... then the screen freezes up for about 1 minute. The system event viewer shows the problem is the event viewer itself. All unnecessay programs have been disabled using the msconfig program from the cmd console. Any ideas on what else to check? Maybe I have to wait for the next Service Pack patch to fix this defective Microsoft upgrade. I have read that uninstalling this service pack can be disasterous.

Slow Login!!!! Mine is slower than mollasses. I put a fresh copy of windows xp pro on my 1.6 ghz p4 with 256ddr ram, then I immediately installed the xp service pack and now it takes a full 3 minutes to start up my computer . I'm thinking this stupid service pack isn't worth it. It killed my computer... and I see I'm not the only one.

The same thing happened to me. I just used the system restore and back dated to the day before I installed the pack and everything went back to running normal. Good luck.

Hi David, I was having alot of problems with SP1 and IE6 Freezing as well as other programs so I uninstalled it with no problems since.....As long as you archived the files you can go to Add/Remove and get rid of it from there. It works for some but not for all. Good Luck!

I found that my computer slowed down only when Xp Office Pro was installed. I unistalled it at it has sped up my computer considerably... maybe cuz the service pack didn't like the pirated copy of office... ooops!

I agree, I've installed the SP1 to get rid of XP bugs but I've received much more problems.at the opening windows start with "virtual memory problem" with 256MB Ram. I'm having trouble with runnig programs at XP. I think SP1 is junk cluster!!! MS should immediately clean this garbage

We now seems identified the problem and know the root cause, but any solution? How can we fix this problem?

My wife experienced the same problem with the added complication that when she restored it to the point before the installation of Service Pack 1 it destroyed her dial up network connections and wouldn't let her re-establish them - we have since found a solution to that by editing the registry, but in the meantime we had to un-restore back to the Service Pack. She is using a P4 with huge amounts of RAM and virtual memory but it was taking minutes to do the simplest tasks such as opening a window. Like at least one other in this forum she was also using Office, but not a pirated copy so that is not the problem - it must be Office itself. Have not yet found a solution to it and intend to un-unrestore the Service Pack and tweak the DUN problem. Less security is preferable to having to wait minutes for stupid Windoze to open a program.

How can MS make so much money producing such absolute crap?
