Hello Everyone,
I have to comp. in my house...one of them brand new p4 3.0gz xp home edition and the other one is old 266mhz w2k. both of them are connected through a router to access internet. the xp comp. is the main comp, but it seems like the internet it goes much slower in the fast xp comp. then the old w2k comp....i dont know why, the pages load faster and everything in this old 266mhz comp. Any ideas? Thanks

If you're using Internet Explorer in the slow PC, check and make sure that the browswer cache is not too large. That will slow page loading to a crawl.
Click on INTERNET OPTIONS, click on SETTINGS, then see what how many MB are set in the little window. If it's higher than 80MB, it's too large. The average value for a cable/DSL connection is between 5 to 15MB; 15 to 25MB for a dial-up modem.
When I took my new PC out of the box, the IE browser cache was set around 300MB. Needless to say, page loading times were measured in long minutes, not seconds. 8-)

I also have slow internet, but i cannot change the setting for temp internet files. It is set to 0. And whatever number i try to change it in (in MB) it keeps coming back with a popup error : enter a value between 0 and 1 for the temporary internet files.
Checking for updated pages is set to automaticly.
I checked for spyware, troyans, virusses but no dice.
Please HELP!!!!

Go to services in Administrative tools and diable QOS. You wil immediately see a marked improvement.

Henk:
Couple things come to mind. Rather than enter numbers for the MB value, can you simply click on the blue up/down arrows to increase or decrease the number?
And make sure to click on OK after you make the changes, then OK again when closing INTERNET OPTIONS.

Adding to my last post also do the following:-
To increase your bandwidth, do the following:
Make sure you're logged in as Administrator, NOT just with any account with admin privileges!
Click the Start button -> Run -> type:
gpedit.msc
Hit Enter or click OK.
Navigate to Local Computer Policy -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> QOS Packet Scheduler.
In the right hand pane double-click on the "Limit reservable bandwidth" setting.
On the Setting tab check the Enabled box.
Change "Bandwidth limit %" to read 0.
Click OK and close Gpedit.msc.
Under Start -> My Computer -> My Network Connections -> View Network Connections -> right-click on your connection -> select Properties (where your protocols are listed) -> make sure QOS Packet Scheduler is enabled.
You need to reboot for these changes to take effect.

Jo Neri, you mean make sure i disable the QOS packet or what? once u said disable it and then u said make sure u enable it?????

Sorry that was disable it XP has this habbit of transmitting unwatted packets (So called quality of Service )
