i have fiber optic connection. and it was
really gud till last saturday. it has gotten
really slugish. i use a software 'graboid'
for downloading movies. it used to give me a
download bandwith of upto 1400kB/s but now
its a mere 60kB/s. i have tried everything.
ad-aware, true sword, dr.web's cure it.
kaspersky. my symptoms point me to a problem
with the svchost.exe but none of the above
softwares found a problem related with that.
i installed ubuntu on my laptop to check if
the isp is having a problem but the net is
ok there. i used dslreports.com. in ubuntu i
am getting a downrate of 1400kb/x whereas in
xp the website shows a mere 500 when i am
lucky. plz help me. i am so frustrated with
this s---.

Your ISP may be throttling your download.

Who is your Internet Service Provider? What country do you live in?

"Your ISP may be throttling your download."

If so, wouldn't it be just as slow in ubuntu?
.......

"it used to give me a

Is it just the one site that's slow, or all sites?
.....

"my symptoms point me to a problem
with the svchost.exe"

svchost.exe is a legitimate Microsoft "slave" program that comes with the Windows version that is used by other programs. You will probably see several instances of it running in Task Mangager at any one time. You can't tell from what you see in Task Manager which program or programs is using an instance of it.

You can use a program such as process explorer - get it by searching for it on the Microsoft site - it can show you what programs are using each svchost.exe instance.

One thing that's often suspicious is one instance of svchost.exe in Task Manager that shows a lot of activity a lot of the time - often it's just something such as your anti-malware software or other software updating itself in the background (e.g. AVG 8, Norton products) which will stop accessing so much after the update is complete, but sometimes it's malware, in which case the activity often does not decrease. If it slows down and eventually stops it's activity when you disconnect the internet cable or turn off it's modem, whatever it is, it's directly related to you accessing the internet.

Do you have any other symptoms?

No one anti-malware software program can detect everything these days, and some recent malware is not detected by commonly used anti-malware software, and can only be detected by a very few such programs.
E.g. Try downloading Malwarebytes, and running it, in Safe mode.
......

"i use a software 'graboid'
for downloading movies."

That's often where people get harder to get rid of malware these days - it's easy to hide it in huge downloads you get from sites that have illegitimate downloads.
Scan the downloads you get before you run them! Even then, you might need more or better anti-malware software to find them.

Stick with torrents.

I do not know if this will help but I use Netmeter to determine my ongoing download and upload rates.

It is a small program that monitor your interface traffic, it might show up if you bandwidth is being eaten up by some other process.

Here is link to the program.

Your ISP *internet service provider* e.g Virgin broadband, BT. then you may find that they have either caught on to what your downloading and reduced your download rate or they may have reduced your download rate due to you downloading to much.

if its due to you downloading too much expect it to be at full speed in a day or two, technically no matter what your D/L *download limit* is they are allowed to reduce your rate due to a fair user policy which basically means download too much and they'll pretty much cut you off.

But if its because they know what your downloading then expect a letter in the post warning you that they MAY take legal action, if your with VIRGIN MEDIA then you are probably safe they send letters but thats it usually

Hope this was helpful

ok guys. thank u so much.
as for the last message. i live in pakistan,
and my provider is Nayatel. so i dont think
that they are throttling my bandwidth for
some reason.
this is wat i am going to do.
1) i am gonna backup my mbr
2) i am gonna take a 4gb usb drive & install
windows on it. then i am gonna install
graboid on that windows and check my internet
speed.
3) if it is better then i am simply gonna
format my C drive and do a fresh install,
because windows sucks so much. there most
basic component (svchost) is so vulnerable to
attacks.
4) if its the same, i vl restore my mbr from
the backup file & format my usb. and use
ubuntu for mass dowloading.

wat do u suggest?is this plan gud?

If they were, I think it's likely it would be just as slow in ubuntu.

You have not said whether it is only one web site, or only graboid on more than one web site, that is really slow.
If that's your case, if the speed on the web is otherwise fine, use something other than graboid, or get the files you want from other sites.

Your MBR (Master Boot Record) is easy to re-write if it is damaged, you won't lose any user data on the hard drive if you do that, but from your description I doubt there's anything wrong with it. The most common symptom of a problem with the MBR is the computer won't boot into Windows at all.
Your MFT (Master File Table) if you are using NTFS partitioning, or your FAT or FAT32 (File Allocation Table) if you using FAT or FAT32 partitioning (there are two copies of that; if one copy is damaged, usually the other copy can be used to restore it by certain programs) are where the locations and sizes of the files on the hard drive(s) are specified, and it does not sound like that, or they, are damaged either.

"(svchost) is so vulnerable to
attacks."

See response 2.
99.9% of the time another program using it is perfectly legitimate, but when malware does use an instance of it, it's because it's easier to hide the running malware program from being seen in Task Manager if it's using it.

You haven't provided any information about what you think might be malware that is slowing down your internet speed.
Did you try Process Explorer?
Malwarebytes?
Netmeter?

"i am simply gonna
format my C drive and do a fresh install,"

Test it, preferably before you do that.
Check your hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostics.
See the latter part of response 1 in this:

Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities

If you don't have a floppy drive, you can get a CD image diagnostic utility from most hard drive manufacturer's web sites, but obviously you would need to make a burned CD, preferably a CD-R for best compatibilty, on another computer if you need to.

A fresh install of Windows or reloading Windows will result in you getting your full speed again, if the ISP is NOT throttling it, but that does not reveal what your problem is now, and if you do the same things again, you may have the same problem in the future.

Re-loading Windows can be very short sighted, especially if you have stuff on the Windows partition you don't want to lose, or can't load again.
Running Setup takes only an hour or so, but it is only the first step of many - it may take you the equivalent in hours of days or longer to get your Windows installation back to the way you want it.
It may take a lot less time to figure out what is wrong with your present Windows installation.

thanks again every body.

I installed net meter and when i am only
using graboid and downloading a video, the
net meter shows me a download rate of 1.2
mbps. thats what i was getting originally.but
in graboid its only 72 kbps. where is the
rest of the 1 mbps worth of bandwidth going?

Probably some problem with Graboid. Anyway, you won't necessarily use all available bandwidth at any site. This is a function of the servers you connect to and possible the equipment your connect is routed through. Looks like Graboid has been having some issues anyway. Look at the link below.

I installed trojan remover. After its scan,
it tells me there is a "rogue DNS entry"
which can forward my network traffic to fake
or malicious websites.
So I flushed my dns.
Now a speed test I do on speedtest.net is
giving me the right bandwidth. so I guess the
problem is solved. what do you guys think?

Hopefully that solved your problem, but it could happen again if you continue to do things the same way.
You probably got that along with something you downloaded. If you had used process explorer, possibly Malwarebytes, you might have identified it a lot sooner.
