Just had this computer new, 10 days ago, with WinXP Pro already installed. However, there are some peculiar things happening that I cannot find answers to at the moment. Firstly, my email messages seem to take ages to be sent out. Yes I HAVE been in touch with my ISP and may have to do so again if the matter doesnt resolve itself. It takes anything up to 30 seconds to connect to the outgoing mailserver and send out a simple two paragraph email. Secondly, the computer keyboard and mouse has locked out on five occasions already, while the screen has just been displaying my usual email client (Thunderbird); nothing else being done at the time. Could only be rescued by a total power-down and restart.
I am also having similar problems trying to upload files (using CuteFTP8) to my website domain; a simple 5kb jpeg uploads ok but the whole system "hangs" for at least 20 seconds, showing the hourglass spinning round, before it finally snaps out of it and says the job is completed.
I have tried disabling my Spyware Doctor program, but that didnt make any difference. I have checked and rechecked all my mail settings, etc and can't find anything incorrect. My screensaver is just a starfield, but this morning it failed to start up after ten minutes of inactivity on-keyboard, and this was followed by a total lockout. Anyone got any thoughts on any of these points?

Hi
OK, I dont mind doing that, but it's yet another program to purchase; is it any different from Spyware Doctor? My scans have all been clean.

Who said that you had to buy it? It's free.

Try Hijack This if you don't want to use anti malware.

The repeated post was just a mistake of the mouse-click. I had visited the Malwarebytes site and just saw BuyNow next to the Download; there was no immediate suggestion that it was free. However....I ran it, and it scanned clean. I have also checked my other spyware and virus programs and they are all showing clean scans.

If the computer is new, you should be contacting Dell. It's under warranty and it's their problem. Good Luck....

Since your computer is less then two weeks old, what I would suggest is to call Dell and ask them to walk you though a system recovery. That will start your computer back to day one like you just opened up the box for the first time. This will also delete all the programs that you installed after you opened it for the first time.

After a fresh restart if Dell came with any free trial antivirus programs restart/re-activate it or ask for help on how to remove it from Dell.

If you need help from your ISP to get back online thats fine.

Once you are online, here are some basic software programs to download:

1. Spybot S&D
2. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
3. A-squared Free
4. Ccleaner
5. cwshredder

If you choose not to use the trial anti-virus then choose which anti-virus you want, either free like Avast or AVG or you can buy one like McAfee or Norton. (Buying one does not mean it's better then free.)

Good luck!

Thanks for all those details; that will take me a while to sort out, so I'll copy them out and keep handy. I have AVG already but not the others.....let's hope this gets a few results.
