Your laptop is old. To speed things up, exit programs you're not using and/or add some extra RAM that's compatible if the laptop supports it.

Is it slow only with web surfing or with applications as well?

In addition to my suggestions above, also defragment your hard drive.

According to Crucial.com, your notebook has 32MB of non-removable memory & one slot that can accept up to 128MB, for a total of 160MB.

160MB is NOT enough RAM to run XP decently...in fact, it will be unbearably slow. I suggest you dump XP & install Win98SE or WinME. A lightweight Linux distro such as Puppy Linux is another possibility.

To have more RAM available at startup,
You can do Start, then RUN, then type
msconfig
Then uncheck items in the Startup tab.

To find out what each Startup(or Process) item

Computer Speed and Performance May Decrease

When you open, then close programs,
programs may not free up RAM memory.
That is called "Memory Leak".
Restarting computer will clear out its RAM memory.
OR
install more RAM memory.

I would also recommend downgrading to Windows 2000 or ME, if you're using XP. But I take it that you're using Windows 95 or 98?
