Comment:

I have a Gateway computer. Recently, it has become terribly slow. I have a cable connection, and still it takes forever to get from page to page.
I did a complete system restore a few months ago, and installed SPybot, Ad-aware, and Bazooka. I also installed an antivirus program called Avast. I have been updating/running all of them religiously.
Now, I look in my Processes tab, and see 76 preocess are running. 11% of my CPU is being used. I recognize some of them, but others, like "jxxr.exe", "dejqg.exe", "htltq.exe" "sqmq.exe" are a mystery to me.
My question: How can I tell what these mystery programs are, and where they might have come from? could this be the reason why my computer is so slow?

As the badies are always ahead of the goodies , sometimes one virii check is not enough . I would do this .

1st step , run a virus check from 1 or all of these .

System Restore option in Windows Me/XP

Users of Windows Me and Windows XP should temporarily turn off System Restore. Windows Me/XP uses this feature, which is enabled by default, to restore the files on your computer in case they become damaged. If a virus, worm, or Trojan infects a computer, System Restore may back up the virus, worm, or Trojan on the computer.

Windows prevents outside programs, including antivirus programs, from modifying System Restore. Therefore, antivirus programs or tools cannot remove threats in the System Restore folder. As a result, System Restore has the potential of restoring an infected file onto your computer, even after you have cleaned the infected files from all the other locations.

Also, a virus scan may detect a threat in the System Restore folder even though you have removed the threat.

For instructions on how to turn off System Restore, read your Windows documentation, or one of the following articles:

Real simple test. Boot up in safe mode. Are your responds times faster?

If so then you know its something being loaded and not your hardware.

If not look to defrag/hardware issues

Always a good place to start in narrowing down the source of the issue.

Those sure look like Virus or Trojans to me. Look for a Trojan remover.
