slow closing of programs

Specs: Windows XP Home, 3.0 ghz / 2 gigs
Having a problem that is driving me
up the wall.

I can use either Windows XP Explore,
or a text editor program, and if i open
a text file, and then close it, it takes
from 5 to 6 seconds to close the

This also happens with my email
program Eudora, and possibly other

I have gone into the SAFE mode, and
verified that the programs all close
instantly, but when I go into msconfig
and turn everything off in the
STARTUP area, and then reboot, then the slowness returns. I have verified in the Systems tray that nothing is being loaded at startup, so why would it act differently than running in the safe mode?

What is XP loading up that it doesn't
load up in the safe mode?

with that of my wife's settings, so I

closing of a program often involves writting to the hard drive.

when was the last time you ran disk cleanup and defrag?

Thanks for the reply.

I have several programs that I run about every 3 days, to keep my drives up to
par. They include Window Washer, Advanced System Optimizer, Advanced
Registry Optimizer, and PerfectDisk 2008. All of those programs I have used for
a long time.
