I have just setup my new ADSL broadband account.
The modem installed fine and I connected to the provider at 576.00 kbps.
The problem occurs when I try and browse the web, it takes forever.. more that 5 mins to load a page (most of the time it doesnt load at all)
This is what I have tried to resolve it....Another modem
different usb leads and data leads
Formatted my PC and did a clean install of win xp
tried a different phone line
tried another usernameMy friend uses the same ISP and his works fine (With the same Modem)
I went to the command promt and ping different sites eg www.google.com www.microsoft.com, and I get mixed results... sometimes as little as 34ms and other times it returns REQUEST TIMEOUT.What can I do to solve this problem????
My PC is
Athlon 1800+
256 DDR memory
Asus A7S333 moboMany Thanks

Who is your ISP?
From what you have said, you have tried everything apart from actually calling the ISP, give it a go, they will help you better than any of us canTake Care

Try the ISP??
that was the first thing I did, They didnt have a clue apart from fobbing me off with stupid endless tests that I knew wouldn't work. People on Internet helplines know 2 things... how to set up there connection, and giving you 101 excuses why it isn't there faultany other ideas would be very greatful

Hmm, you seem pretty computer Literate so i think anything i say you would of already done, however try this...
in Internet Explorer go to
Tools > Internet Options > General
under "Temporary internet Files" click on 'Settings' then under Temporary Internet Settings Files move the bar up more, to allow more Temp files to be stored, it could be that because you have DSL you are downloading loads of information and your computer cant store any more temp files...this is a long shot seeing as you seem to know a bit about computers but give it a go, sorry i couldnt be more helpAaron

thanks, you are right, I am a computer technician, unfortunatly this will not solve the problem as I can use my 56K dial up connection without any problems (ie my dial up connection is working faster that the adsl) thanks anyway.

Your ISP can do more then test your line, Ask them to Unbind/Bind Delete cross connect & Build the cross connect & then rest your port. Now this is all depending on where you live and what type of service you have...

Here is a quick fix I always use if I encounter any kind of network problems.
Go to start Run
type in cmd
at the prompt type exactly with the space
ipconfig /release press enter
ipconfig /renew press enter
ipconfig /all press enter
See if that helps you out

Hi
What brand and model(s) of modems have you tried so far ? Were they all usb modems ? USB modems can be a real pain on some systems. You mentioned that your friend has the same modem and that his connection works. Are your computers the same hardware and software wise ? Are you both geographically located near each other ? I would not rule out hardware / software conflicts right away based on that. Do you have other devices on the USB bus ? Have you tried removing those devices ?
You can also contact your provider and request that a technician be sent out. Some support staff will assume that if they can see you on their network then all is ok. There are techs out there that do know what they are doing. If you are not happy with the tech on the phone or the problem is not getting any closer to being resolved then ask for it to be escalated to another tech.
You mentioned that you tried pinging a few sites and got mixed results . Did you try doing any tracerts ?
On a side note to Robbie.
In control panel > network connections if you right click on your connection and select repair you can perform the following outlined in MS KB 289256.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;289256
The following actions are taken if you select the Repair option on a LAN or high-speed Internet connection.
NOTE: The actions occur in the order that they are listed. A corresponding command is listed next to each action.
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) lease is renewed: ipconfig /renew
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) cache is flushed: arp -d *
Reload of the NetBIOS name cache: nbtstat -R
NetBIOS name update is sent: nbtstat -RR
Domain Name System (DNS) cache is flushed: ipconfig /flushdns
DNS name registration: ipconfig /registerdns

Why should I have to do all this on a clean install of windows xp?? My friend also tried the clean install, using the same modem and it worked fine, I have used his account details on MY PC at HIS house and still the connection is slow, I'm assuming that the modem and my Motherboard do not get on, if this is the case then I'm gonna have to see if there is a patch out there which will help.
With regards to Rizzo 6801 comment on the helpline staff, in my experience they are all usless and once they are off there usual script all they do is try and pass the buck.
Think I'm gonna try a BIOS flash, see what happens, I begrudge trying another modem cos I've just paid money for this one.
And the comment on USB Modems, I have install 4 of these modems on different machines, they have all worked without fault, apart from this one. but I know the modem isnt to blame.
Oh and there is no option to repair this network connection, and IPCONFIG /RELEASE etc etc doesnt work.

Hi
As you noted you were originally able to connect so the chances of a bad modem is very unlikely.
Does your motherboard have a Via Chipset ? Is it an Alcatel modem ? Have you installed the latest Via 4 in 1 drivers ? I think there was a fix for some USB issues with the latest Via drivers.
