a few questions:

1. Did you chek to see if your cables are connected securly. And that you have Pin 1 in the right side?

2. Did you set the jumper(if any) to slave?

3. Of cource power connected?

4. Did you do a complete reformat of the old hdd?

Those are a few things that I always double chek to see if my bios is not detecting drives. I would think your drive is a fairly older drive so you don't need to worry about drivers.

Do you have a previous Windows 98/ME start up disk? You can run the disk utility. Or find out what kind of drive it is (maxtor, WD) then download the utility...get the DOS one so that you can boot up in the utility. Or find any formating utility.

Start > Run diskmgmt.msc

Scroll down the bottom half of the window to see if the drive is listed; you might need to right click and assign a drive letter.

You might also need to check the device manager. (compmgmt.msc I think)

i have done as advised in reply 5 run diskmgmt.msc and it only shows my master drive and not the slave.
i have been into the bios and the slave drive has been auto detected, but i cant find it knowhere on my o/s. i have a feeling the slave drive im trying to find hasnot been formated properly as the pc that it came from was in the middle of restoreing windows and crashed.
is there any program that i could use to help my o/s find the drive??

maybe try setting your main HD to Master (it probably came with the CS jumper on) and your 2nd HD to slave. Now see if it gets recognized.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

If that doesnt work, try removing your master, setting your current slave to master.. fdisk and format the old hd. then setting it back to slave and set your other hd back to master and see if it picks up the old hd.

Duane--
Are both drives on an IDE ribbon cable ??
If so, the Master drive is suppose to be connected to the opposite end of the cable from the motherboard, and the Slave drive at the middle connector.

yes cables are both the correct way round. my mate has just left and the problem is baffled him. we formated the slave drive in dos. the DOS and bios finds the slave hdd fine but... we cant get it into the windows o/s. its not in disk manager. any other ideas to whats causeing this problem THANKS to everyone for there posts.
i have not yet tried switching jumpers to cs rather than master my friend beleives that isnt the problem as the slave drive is all there in the bios

Why not try response 9? You'll never know till you try it. Maybe your 'mate' isn't always right? Furthermore if your master is set to CS, it has to be on the END of the cable and the slave 2nd on the ribbon (closest to the MOB)

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

I had this problem recently on my new PC, which was resolved by setting both jumpers to CS.
