Skype freezes when videocall starts w/ Genius ilook 310 wcam

Gateway / Mx3560

Specs: XP Home, P4 1.8Ghz/512mb
Its the most annoying thing. The webcam works just fine outside of skype and even when you make a video call, before the call is answered it functions just fine.

However once either you answer the call, or the person you're calling answers, the whole laptop freezes completely.

Any ideas?

XP Home, P4 1.8Ghz/512mb

If those are your system specs that may be part of the problem. 512mb ram is very small by modern standards and while it exceeds the minimum recommendations for XP it does not surprise me that a system with that little would suffer lockups when dealing with video. Being a laptop it is also likely the graphics run on a shared ram basis meaning even less than 512 mb is available for the operating system and programs. According to Gateway support your system has "512 MB DDR (1 × 512 MB) SODIMM (PC2700) Expandable to 1.5 GB"
I suggest you get a 1gb SODIMM stick suitable for the system and max out your ram, then also see if there is a bios setting you can make to increase the amount of shared ram available for graphics. Also check your taskmanager to see if there are things running in the background that you can turn off while using skype to reduce the load.
