Im refomatting my friends comp and fixing it up with Xp. All should go good but if not ill ask you guys heh. But my ques. is i checked his comp out today and just noticed he had to use some verizon program to connect to online. I mean it was fairly quick but i thought with dsl you should be able to surf right when you put it on without connecting? I have cable and thats how it is for me but then again i never did install that software crap that the company told me to do. I just used Xp to automatically configure it. Can the same be done with his or does dsl "need" top be connected so the company know your online or something.

Verizon's program is WinPoet, a stodgy program that most users get rid of quickly. It is initially needed to register with Verizon. Once that's done and the user has his username and password he can uninstall WinPoet and use WinXP's New Connection Wizard.

Alright thats cool. Hahah, the guy that installed my cable was mad lazy so he was just plug this cable modem in and install the program on the cd and be sure to register it. Well its been about 2 months and i still never registered it. Find no reason to, i dont need there email services anyhow.
But for my friend though it think hell enjoy just turning on his comp and already being connected. Thanks

DSL isn't 'always on' the same as cable broadband. With Win 2000, Win 9x you can tweak the PPPoE in the control panel to dial up automatically on connection, but with XP you will have to go through a regular dial up procedure. It is very fast tho' connecting, at least mine is, compared to regular dialup. Only takes about 3 seconds to connect with XP. With my server, contrary to what ops states with Verizon,I didn't have to install anything & didn't.Just needed the dial up number. With 2000 and other versions of Windows you do need some sort of 'access' manager. You can safely remove it from your friend's machine if he is only using XP+DSL

MaryB, That depends on your ISP and Phone co., different companies do it different. I have DSL and mine is always on just like cable. I don't have Verizon though.

Scott - I don't believe starting DSL automatically has anything to do with ISP or phone company. In order to have it start automatically it is has to be in start up folder after being configured not to check for user name or password. Or, of course if you have an always on router connection.

MaryB, No I'm saying nothing about starting dsl automatically, and I'm saying nothing about a router, what You said is that DSL isn't an "always on" connection. And you said that you can "tweak the control panel to dial up automatically". And I AM saying not everyone's DSL is as you suggest. I've had MSN dsl for over a year, I don't have any of their software on my PC, I have never once had to dial up anything, and I only had to log in the very first time I used it, when I hooked up the DSL modem they sent me. The modem is always on and always connected unless I unplug it due to an electric storm. So it does have to do with your isp and dsl connection(that is brought to you by your telephone co.) Your isp makes you log on and dial up when you want to use it and mine does not. If there's one thing I've learned over and over again from this board is that just because I do things one way, or have certain service that does things a certain way, doesn't mean that everyone's approach is the same as mine.
Summary: well right now im running off of win2K, but a friend has been asking me how to setup a connection through XP. well i havent had time to go over there to figure it out, and i have no time to figure it ...
Summary: Verizon DSL uses PPPOE, a legacy system used to "dial up" a DSL connection. The WinPoet software initiates this connection. Bypassing the WinPoet software will not give you a valid connection, as the ...
