Comment:

When I start Windows, I now get a Black page saying:" Windows couldnt update the file %1 from %2.Windows couldnt upgrade 1 or more system files before starting. If Windows fails to start, run set up again. Press any key to continue" When I press any key,as instructed, then I get the usual sign on screen. What causes this & how do I fix it? This doesnt happen everytime I attempt to sign onto Windows, but happens Often. How do I run the "set-up"again & should I? Thank You....grandmashu

Do you have Microsoft's AutoUpdate turned on?
If you do, sometimes updates are installed after you have chosen to Shut Down Windows. In that case, you will get a message along the lines of ".... is installing xx updates..Do not turn off or remove the power to your computer. Windows will shut down after the updates have been installed..." or similar.

If you get a message like that and you turn off the power to your computer or hold the power button in until the computer shuts off, before the updates are completely installed, that interferes with the install of the updates, and you're bound to get messages sometimes when you later boot that something that was supposed to be installed was not installed.

Does your computer still have the original HP Windows and software installation on it?
