Not sure if this is the right forum, if not sorry. Anyways, I stupidly downloaded a program to change my SID in order to install a program. I wasnt sure exactly what a SID was so during the process I searched it. After realizing it was unneccessary for me to be changing it I cancelled the change half way through and quickly did a system restore. I now am unable to open most files, download new files, copy files onto a CD or USB drive among many other things. Is my system basically fried or is there a way I can fix it?

Good question...SID is a Computer Security Identifier that is unique to each computer on a network...it is used to prevent a network server "mixing" up 2 computers...Identical SID's can create secuirty considerations in a network...
There are many programs out there that will allow you to change a SID without problems...
So, it is curious why cancelling the SID change then a system restore would stop access to various things...
Now, it could be that cancelling the SID prevented establishing a poroper SID, but I don;t think that would stop the comptuer form working correctly...
I'm kinda thinking the problem is with the system restore rather than the SID...
Try this...down NewSid here...
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...
run it and it will create a SID for the computer...if that fixes it, great...If not...then I would first start looking for viruses/spyware..google for MBAM, SuperAntiSpyware and run them according to directions on the websites...
If that does not do it then grab your XP CD and do a repair install...you can google for info on how to do this...
God luck
