Hi all;
When I select "Shutdwn" my PC reboots instead. Wednesday when I started it up I got the "No Operating sysytem found" and had to do the "Select setup to continue." I had to do this a few times before Windows started. Any idea how I can get my PC to shutdown and not reboot when I select shutdown? I've removed SP3.

make sure in your power settings [control panel] advanced is set to shutdown for "power buttons"
Sounds like you may have bigger issues than sp3. Make sure you are spyware and virus free. Run chkdsk /r at a cmd prompt, answer yes to the question and reboot so it runs. This will make sure your file structure is correct.

Did it ever work correctly?
I assume that some OS issue might be letting the bios call for a reboot, the system crashes on exit. Might check bios for when to power on if fail.
Might look at event viewer first for clues. Some service might call that.
Might consider a system restore point to a time when it worked.
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

Resources to Help Troubleshoot Shutdown Problems in Windows XP

I finally got my PC to shut down. I ran 3 spyware programs, Kaspersky Online virus detection and even ran chkdsk /r with nothing to show that would cause the problem. This morning I did a restore to last week with no luck. As a last resort I did a restore operation to just before I installed SP3. That was the ticket. I'm a happy camper now.

Looks like I spoke too soon. I got another "No operating system found" when I booted up the PC this afternoon. So, considering how much trouble (no OS, rebbots on shutdown, etc.) I've had with it the last few days I took it back to where I bought it as I purchased the extended warranty. THey'll look at it Monday.

Yep you've probably got intermittent hard drive failure.
