Specs: xp home sp2, 1800/768

Just recently I have been having trouble getting my pc to shutdown. When using the usual procedure of going to start, turn off computer, turn off, it sometimes does nothing at all or at least takes so long it seems like it is doing nothing, then when it does, it shows the logging off message, the windows is shutting down message and then the screen goes blank and the pc just sits there for ever doing nothing but wont switch off. If I switch off manually at this point I still get a light up on my keyboard when all else has shut down. I have found that I need to do a restart and shutdown without logging on to any account, then it shuts down ok. Any ideas as to what might be causing this problem?

Here are some possibles.

Will not Shutdown
http://www.windowsxpatoz.com/cgi-bin/performance/index.cgi?answer=1036283320&id=1036282433
When booting press delete and go into bios and then power management, look for the power down or shut off option and select instant off instead of delay etc this should 100% solve your problem.

In Windows XP there is a bug that keeps the computer from powering off on shutdown. It is easily fixed.
Click on Start/Settings/Control Panel/System.
Click on Hardware then Device Manager.
Click on View at top then Show Hidden Devices.
Click on the plus sign next to NT/Apm/Legacy Support.
RIGHT click on the entry NT/Apm/Legacy Interface Node.
Click on Enable.

John, I have a shutdown problem also, and I tried that url you just said and it won't come up. Also in my device manager there is no NT/Apm/Legacy Support entry either? You sure those are for XP Home?
Thanks

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Firstly thanks for your help so far, not found an answer yet though. I thought it was only on shutdown but I have now found that it is the same when trying to log of of any open account, I can switch accounts with no problem but if I try to log off of one account it takes ages to do so then the pc will hang after the saving your settings message, giving a black screen with just the mouse pointer, which I can still move around, but nothing responds and I have to press reset or manually turn off power.

Once you are really sure you are clean, here are 2 more things, I can think of to do.

Click Start and then click Run.
In the Open box, copy & paste > sfc /scannow, and then click OK. Note that you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP installation CD-ROM.

Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310747

=======================================

If you need to reinstall WindowsXP and want to keep all your current installed applications and settings:
1. Start WindowsXP
2. Go to the location of your source files
3. Run WINNT32 /unattend
For example, D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend ( copy & paste this command into the RUN box, then press ENTER ) Your computer will do the rest.
Or,
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
Copy & paste > D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend
Press Enter.
If you have i386 on your drive, you can replace D: ( if D: is your cd drive ) with the location of it.

Thanks for the answers, I have found the problem I think. I had recently connected a usb2 hub/card reader which in itself is no problem but I had a usb powered desktop xmas tree plugged into it, unplugging before shutdown stops the problem.
