shutdown halts

i suspect a permitted user has hacked my pc, the shutdown halts effectively disabling Norton Internet Security. I reinstalled NIS and IE but problem still occurs.

allenm: most XP shutdown failures will be related to device drivers, so always check if you have the latest drivers for your devices (printer, keyboard, mouse, sound card, etc.).

a patch is available on the Windows Update site under Recommended Updates for Win XP Professional, titled Restarting Windows XP.

if still no joy, try out a free utility called Force Down 1.0 to force a shutdown, available at:
