shut down wont work

im using xp professional, when i choose shut down from the start menu, nothing happens. the only way to shut down my comp is to unplug it. can anyone help?

I had this problem last night after I had installed NTL's dial-up software. XP has troubleshooting for start up and shut down problems (help and support - fixing a problem - start up and shut down problems). I restored my system to earlier settings and everything was OK after that.
