remove start up programs that don't need to be running. Also disable the windows start up and sign off sounds.
That should speed things up

Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

I shut off all start up programs and it still takes several minutes to even show me the shut down option window.

Some of these tips involve editing the registry if you are comfortable doing that. You should back up the eegistry first. http://searchwarp.com/swa35058.htm

Have you tried all of these ?

Also, what firewall and/or antivirus program are you running ?

Yes tried and didn't work. It doesn't seem to be a matter of shutting down once the shut down option window comes up... Once I choose shut down it goes down as normal. It's just when I click on start then shut down that it takes minutes for the window to pop up. Using avg and windows firewall. Thanks.
