shut down problem-windows xp

Specs: Windows XP
my computer does not shut down ...when i
click the 'ture off' computer option from 'start'
as usual the options stand by,turn off and
restart appears..
bt clicking on turn off as i used to isn't
stutting down
what to do?
i have downloaded something(i think sound
card & some meadia player) & now i deleted it
permanently....(from dowloads also)
i think the problem stars from the day in which
i downloaded them
don't know what is the problem
please help me...

Abhijna , I suspect you're correct blaming the download. Sounds to me like it installed a worm/trojan which needs to be cleaned. Scan? If that doesn't do the trick, read on.
FWIW, Windows seems to have been plagued with shutdown problems of one sort or another since day 1. I use a standalone shutdown proggie (for convenience) called 'Slawdog' (said to work on all versions). Get it free @:
among other places. Works good and I drag/dropped the icon into my quick launch so it'd be handy for use.
