when i click shut down...it dosent response..but none of program gets hanged...i can shut down by switching... user.. and then switching off .in the logon screen itself ... please help me ...even the power button in cpu also dosent response...

Also, Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

TRY ---
In Control Panel,
click User Accounts,
then "Change the way users log on or off",
check mark both items--
"Use Welcome Screen", and
"Use Fast User Switching"

Best not to hold in the Power Button

if you hold in the power button for 5 seconds or more, the PC
should shut down.

Are there any errors in the event viewer? If so, what are they?

there is no big errors to worry about ... only 3 errors..two of them are google update error and another is application hang error.. but this error is submited after the shutting down problem occured .. i have another quiery.. that is will holding power button.. effect any of my files....i mean that will it get deleted or anything.. else..will happen. is this option of shutting down adviceable

your existing saved files should be fine, but if you have anything file that is unfinished and not saved , like in word, you will probably lose that. It is a safe way to power down your PC from a PC freeze.

But you should remedy the shutdown problem.
You could start by doing an sfc /scannow if you have an XP install CD. It will replace any damaged system files.

If that doesn't work, you may want to do a repair install:
