Comment:

I have XP PRO with the SP1 installed. Using the portscan at DSLReports, an open port shows. It is: TFTP - port 69.

I have up to date Zone Alarm and am connected via a LinkSYS rounter, which has a NAT firewall.

I do not know what else to do, as far as firewall protection.

Is there a way to close this port via tweaks in the XP Pro OS?

Thanks !

Turn on the SPI in the advanced section on your router.

I have a Linksys BEFW11S4.

I looked through all settings in the unit itself and didn't see any reference to SPI.

What does that stand for, and is there a different term for the setting?

Thanks !

PS (I'm also showing an Open Port 8080 from a scan at www.blackhole.com)

Scott,

I think I found it....I looked closely in the filtering section and noticed that the "Remote Monitoring" and "Remote Update" features were enabled.

That took care of port 69 and specifically mentinoed port 8080.

BTW...even with these ports responding....is the ping response only coming from the Rounter (meaning the PC is actually safe)?

Thanks for the tip.

If your router is locked up, so is your computer. If it can't get past your router, it can't get to your PC. =)

Sorry I didn't get back sooner. SPI stands for stateful packet inspection, this inspects packets(the signal) that are sent out and only lets signals back in that are requested by you in the outgoing packets. Some Linksys routers will respond to those tests with a "closed" instead of "stealth". But that's the router and not your PC. And yes your PC will communicate with your router and even your dsl modem for dns services. Unless you use your PC from somewhere else I'd turn off the remote settings.

Thanks for the feedback.

After disabling all remote features in the router, I'm now gettig a clean bill of health from both Blackhole and DSLReports.

Thanks !
