should I get a router?

I have two computers and they both use the same modem. I don't have a switch or a router so if one of them is plugged into the internet, the other is not. This can be a pain and I'm considering getting either a switch or a router. One worry I have is that if one computer is prone to getting viruses, will getting a router or switch make the other more vulnerable?

Any computer that has access to the internet is prone to getting a virus - router or no router.
However, getting a router will make sharing one internet connection between more than one system easy for you inaddition to it acting as a hardware firewall.

any windows computer connected to the internet is vulnerable.
however, your cable/dsl modem might have built-in NAT or firewall, if so a network hub will do.
if you post the model no of the modem, we may may dig up more info.

Yes, get a router, and a UPS wouldn't hurt either.
