I’m new to XP, and I’m having problems with shortcuts.
In Windows 2000, I could save a file to a deep network path by double-clicking a local shortcut in the “Save As” dialog box. In XP, the shortcuts don’t appear, so I have to navigate all the way to the network folder I want to save the file in.
Similar problem in the “Open” dialog box. I can now see the shortcuts, but when I double-click the shortcut I get this error message: “The document name or path is not valid.” XP seems to think I’m actually trying to open the *.lnk file in my application!
Any insight or assistance is appreciated.

Sorry to be dense, but I don't know where you are. Are you in IE, Windows Explorer, and are you talking about your favorites folder or something else? Are you taling about the Open, Cut, Paste, Save As etc. drop down window? Again, it's been a long day, and I may have missed something.

1) If you want to view shortcuts to files in the Open/Save Dialog, you must first choose "Files of Type" All (*.*) Shortcuts to folders show always regardless.
2) Make sure the shortcut is valid and that the program in question works with UNC-style paths (such as \\server\share\etc).
Good Luck

Salgolf: To see the "Save As" or "Open" dialog box, go to any application where you can click File, then Save As; or File, then Open. A box pops up, allowing you to find the destination where you want to save the file, whether it be a .doc, .xls, .html, etc.
CyberSlug:
1) I'm referring to shortcuts to folders, and these folder shortcuts are not visible in the "Save As" dialog. The folder shortcuts are visible in the "Open" dialog box, but when I double-click them the application tries to open the *.lnk file.2) The shortcuts are valid. Double-clicking on them in Windows Explorer works just fine.
Thanks for the input...
